Majestic old cottonwood trees such as this, once welcome relief on the sparse prairie of eastern Colorado, are quickly vanishing as urban development and sprawl divert precious water to the wasteful cities. Farmers and ranchers understood the precious commodity in the arid high plains, and used water sparingly to quench thirsty fields that produced crops to feed our nation.
